FAQs
If you’re considering seeing a clinical psychologist in Wodonga, you might have questions — and that’s completely normal. Here you'll find answers to common queries about therapy, mental health support, referrals, fees, Medicare rebates, and more. If there's something we haven’t covered here, feel free to get in touch.
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
Not at all. You’re welcome to book an appointment with us privately at any time — no referral needed. However, if you’d like to access Medicare rebates, you’ll need a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Just let your doctor know you’d like support for your mental health, and they’ll guide you through the process.
What is a Mental Health Care Plan and how does it work?
A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a referral from your GP that gives you access to Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual therapy sessions per calendar year. You’ll need to book a longer consultation with your GP to talk through your needs and have the plan prepared.
Bring your MHCP and referral letter to your first session, or ask your medical centre to email it to us directly at molly@thepsychologycollective.au. Once we have it, you’ll only need to pay the gap between the session fee and your Medicare rebate.
How much does a session cost?
Our standard session fee will be discussed with you when booking with The Psychology Collective Wodonga. If you have a Mental Health Care Plan, you’ll receive a Medicare rebate of $145.25 per session, which reduces your out-of-pocket cost. We also offer private appointments for those not using Medicare, and some clients may be able to claim a rebate through private health insurance depending on your policy.
Can I use private health insurance instead of Medicare?
Yes, absolutely. If you have extras cover that includes psychology, you may be eligible for a rebate through your private health fund. These rebates vary depending on your insurer and level of cover, so it’s best to check with them directly.
Please note: you can’t claim both Medicare and private health for the same session — but we can help you figure out what works best for you.
How often will I need to come to therapy?
That’s entirely up to you and what feels right. Some people come weekly, especially at the beginning. Others prefer fortnightly or monthly sessions. We’ll talk about your goals and find a rhythm that suits your needs, your lifestyle, and your stage of healing. There’s no one-size-fits-all — therapy is a personal journey, and we’ll walk it together at your pace.
What can I expect in my first session?
The first session is all about getting to know you. We’ll talk about what’s brought you here, what you’re hoping to gain from therapy, and begin building a sense of trust and safety. There’s no pressure to share everything right away — we move at your pace. You're in safe hands.
What kinds of issues do you work with?
At The Psychology Collective Wodonga, we work with a wide range of concerns, including (but not limited to): anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, self-esteem, life transitions, perinatal mental health, racing thoughts, trauma, and personal growth. If you’re unsure whether therapy is right for your specific needs, feel free to reach out — we’re happy to chat about how we can support you.
Can I cancel or reschedule a session?
Of course — life happens. I kindly ask for at least 48 hours’ notice for cancellations or changes, so we can offer your spot to someone else. Late cancellations or missed appointments may incur a fee, which will be outlined in your booking confirmation.
What if I’m not sure therapy is right for me?
That’s okay — many people feel uncertain at first. The important thing is you’ve taken the first step by reaching out. You're welcome to book an initial session and see how it feels. Therapy is a collaborative process, and we’ll work together to make sure you feel safe, supported, and seen.
